The Beginning
TWO DESIGNERS, ONE IDEA
Vexon was founded in 1994 in Gothenburg, Sweden by Lars Vexen and Marcus Ohlin — two industrial designers who had spent the previous decade working in automotive engineering. They brought the same discipline to footwear: nothing unnecessary, everything considered.
Their frustration with the industry was straightforward. Performance footwear had drifted. The people making the shoes had stopped talking to the people wearing them. Lars and Marcus believed that if you built something honest and built it well, the rest would follow.
The First Model
THE V-01
“We never chased what was trending. Every shoe is built to perform, to last, and to earn its place in your rotation.”
The V-01 was their answer. A road running shoe with no superfluous features — no marketing language in the midsole, no colourways designed to catch an eye on a shelf. Just a precisely calibrated shoe built for the athlete who demanded honesty from their equipment.
Word spread through the Swedish athletics community before anyone outside Gothenburg had heard of the brand. Within eighteen months the V-01 had found its way onto the feet of competitive runners across Scandinavia. Vexon had never placed a single advertisement.
Growing the Range
BEYOND THE TRACK
European distribution came in 2001. Not through a commercial deal, but through demand. Retailers in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK were fielding requests from customers who had encountered the shoes at races and wanted more. Vexon obliged reluctantly — the founding team was cautious about anything that might dilute what they had built.
The Core line arrived in 2003. Not as a pivot toward lifestyle, but as a response to what their customers were already doing. Runners had been wearing the V-01 everywhere, not just on the track. Vexon formalised what was already happening, and the Core line sold out in its first week without a single press release.
The Philosophy
NOTHING SHIPS UNTIL IT'S READY
“The founding design philosophy hasn't changed. Every model goes through the same rigorous development process Lars and Marcus established in the early nineties.”
Inside the Gothenburg facility, the process is unchanged from the early days. Materials are selected for durability and feel, not cost. Prototypes are worn for months before a design is signed off. There is no fixed release schedule. Nothing ships until it earns its place.
That approach has occasionally frustrated retailers and confused commentators expecting seasonal collections. It has never frustrated the people wearing the shoes.
Today
THIRTY YEARS ON
Vexon now operates across twelve countries. The Gothenburg facility has expanded twice. Lars remains involved in design. The team is larger but the culture is recognisably the same — direct, unhurried, focused on the work.
Three decades after the V-01, the brand's reputation rests on the same thing it always did. Not marketing. Not collaborations. Not limited releases. Just shoes that work, made by people who care whether they work.
